While Senator Leland Yee hasn’t yet responded to requests for an explanation of his ‘gamers quiet down’ statement, Senator Lee’s chief-of-staff, Adam Keigwin, did…
“It wasn’t the most artful thing he ever said.” He also said that, although the Senator was quoted accurately, his statement was in the context of the gaming industry; the quote “was not directed at individual gamers.”
Want to know the best part about all this? Keigwin is a gamer himself. He also states that other staffers of Yee are gamers. Better still, Yee’s own children play video games. I’d love to see him tell his kids that their opinion doesn’t matter.
Keigwin went further to explain what the Senator was really trying to say.
In short, Yee feels that the gaming industry doesn’t have credibility, but rather a “vested interest” in continuing the status quo, as “violent games are successful.” As such, “their position isn’t relevant in this debate.” Rather, the Senator wants to know “what’s the science?” behind any correlation between violent games and violent acts.
After this debacle, I think it’s Mr. Yee that needs to quiet down.
