Cause ~ Game Development Too Short – Result ~ Too Many Games of Lacking Quality

Please forgive me as I am not the best writer out there on the Internet or in the Real World but at least I try to get my ideas out.

I have been into gaming since 1985 when I was a wee kid. One thing I have always noticed there have been plenty of games to play since those old school kid days but there is a very serious trend that is happening in gaming at the moment and it reflects exactly what the movie industry was, is, has been experiencing. Development of movies as well as games has increased tremendously where there is a movie or game released every few months sometimes several times in one month from the same companies.

The issue I have seen and see coming is there is an overload of entertainment for the short hours of time we have. There are just excessively many products out at a time and this is affecting the industry.

Now let me explain by using the movie industry. Have you notice over the last 10 maybe up to last 15 years movie quality has dramatically dropped and there are increasingly terrible movies on the market? The market is being flooded by movies. The reason it is being flooded as there are more movies being made in shorter periods. Why is this a problem? Well due to shorter periods of work time the scripts, the filming; the editing has been reduced from say like movies in the 80’s. There were so many amazing movies from the 80’s from various companies. The reason they were so amazing is there was more time between movies meaning more time to develop scripts, more time to film, and yes, even though it was crude back then, more time to edit. Allowing more time for any type of entertainment usually increases the quality of the product. The movie industry has been failing due to lack of quality of product and now are forced to increase ticket prices and invent old but new ways to get people into the theaters (3D). The problem is the products horribly suck.

Now I am not blind there have been some very interesting and successful movies and franchise movies with great quality behind them but they are few compared to back in the 80’s where just about any movie be it cheap to expensive for the time was a great movie. Even the not so great movies or unknown movies from that time are pretty damn good.

This problem with the movie industry I see happening, as I write this, to the gaming industry. There are many great games in the industry but so many that incorporates past successes and only change a couple things. So many games out are starting to look and behave like the same game. There are sequels after sequels just like the movie industry that try to encourage past emotions but they usually end up with people having a sour taste in their mouths. This results in the drop off sales for many games. Many may scuff at this idea and try to flame this post but it is happening.

Have you noticed an increase of Limited Edition or Special Edition products in the game industry? Does that equate to increasing ticket prices and thought out gimmicks like have been happening in the movie industry? I would say…..yes.

If game companies hang back with their products say a year extra and look through their products they can refine them more and make them better. I have a couple of dislikes in games that are results of the “Hurry Up and Make Process”. There are so many games with side quests for collecting various things to do this and to do that. Is this necessary anymore? We have games pretty much rivaling movies in story, graphics, audio, music, and acting. Therefore, would it not be better to make the game better than adding useless modes that try to extend the length of the game. If the game is going to be short make sure it wows people do not force people to romp through a game just because it makes them feel like they are getting more out of a game. It is useless and time consuming on both ends of the gaming industry be it players or creators.

Yes, there are many upon many great games on the market. I actually see much more interesting games from the small, independent companies than the large multibillion dollar companies. These Indies remind me of the 80’s with all those movies. Back in 80’s there were so many small movie companies making movies. Many of the movies were high quality if not higher quality than the big studios. Many of the Indie games are short, thought out, not rushed to market and tend to be better games.

Several big companies are just churning out game after game after game after game in a short period. One that comes to mind is EA. Now before I am attacked I have love what EA has done with games. They have been around for a long time but they have become a company that just throws games out quickly some with quality many without. EA needs to slow down and look at their products. Do we need a new or rehashed Need for Speed product every five to seven months? The more you churn out games the more you are over saturating your product and the more you turn people off. This is not a way to go!
